In this course, mindfulness is introduced and its benefits are explained. We explore the impact of stress in our lives and techniques are taught that help us to recover more quickly. We investigate the nature of the thinking mind and learn how to slow the mind down. We also explore emotions and learn to have a greater acceptance of whatever challenges we are facing at any particular time. Participants learn that mindfulness can be practised in everyday life, but also during meditation. In fact, mindfulness is used to take us deeper into meditation where we can rest, recover, heal and build courage, strength and resilience.
This eight week course encourages participants to keep practising the skills they learned in Mindfulness in the Workplace Part 1. Stress management, self-care, regular meditation and the simplicity of mindfulness continue to be key themes throughout this course. We also start to explore practical applications of mindfulness. These include dealing with adversity, dealing with physical pain, communicating mindfully and practising empathy. Participants are reminded that they don’t need to stop the thinking mind in order to meditate – they just need to be willing to make the effort. It’s not realistic to expect the mind to stop just because we want to start meditating. Benefits will be felt, even at times when the mind remains active.
Mindfulness alone is a wonderful form of meditation but there are many other types available. Everyone is different, so it is worthwhile trying different techniques to see what suits each individual best. Over the eight weeks, participants learn eight different styles of meditation. These include breathwork, sound meditation, body relaxation, the use of mantras and affirmations and more. We use meditation to heal ourselves and to send healing to others. By exploring different styles of meditation, it is highly likely that every participant will leave the course with at least one style that suits their personal needs.
Both in the workplace and in our personal lives, it is important to be able to communicate with empathy, honesty and compassion. Conflict can be resolved without resorting to anger or blame and everyone’s needs can be met in a satisfactory way. Throughout this course, participants learn to identify their strengths, set boundaries and make requests in such a way that every person is respected and every relationship is enriched
